Inspiration comes from landscapes and wildlife, the play of light, and the technical challenge of creating a work of art using different materials.

I'm based in Deeside, north east Scotland, and work in oil, acrylic and mixed media.  I'm always keen to try new techniques whilst striving to capture the natural beauty and meaning of the everyday landscapes around me – from wide vistas to micro details.  I hope to capture a little of what makes everyday landscapes special, particularly the interaction between the seasons, weather and land. I paint both realistic impressions and abstracts, depending on what the subject inspires. Recent work is in acrylic and ink on paper, where I’ll often start a painting with no specific place in mind, working the layers until a landscape I recognise emerges

In my journey as an artist, a gallery tour of Canada, visiting the renowned and inspirational paintings of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, proved to be a pivotal moment.  Similarly, a career break in Australia provided the opportunity to undertake formal training in painting techniques alongside some fabulous artists.

Art and painting have led me to wonderful places in Scotland and across the world. Influences include the Canadian Group of Seven, Robert Genn, Erin Hanson and Leanne Pearson, amongst many others.

Art education: Claremont School of Art, Perth, Western Australia.

Leanne Pearson, Perth, Western Australia.

Techniques shared by various Scottish artists through Upper Deeside Art Society workshops, Scotland.
